Speakers of CHaINA '08 Live (Part 2)Best Practices ![]() Dual Sourcing for Short-Lifecycle Products
Leading-edge manufacturers have long used rapid prototyping to reduce a product’s time to market. Rapid prototyping employs a more responsive, yet more expensive, part to test the product’s design and to possibly begin initial production until the less expensive, established, part is available. In this paper, we examine whether it makes sense to transition back from the established part to the prototyping part at some point in the lifecycle. We use a pair of terms, slow part and fast part, to frame such a dual sourcing strategy for short-lifecycle products. We assume there are two potential orders from the slow part through the product lifecycle and frame the problem as a two-stage stochastic dynamic program where the decision variables are the two order quantities of the slow part and the timing of the second order. Two cases for this problem are analyzed:the first case considers multiple periods but uncorrelated demands while the second case considers two periods with correlated demands. Both cases are analytically solved and numerically tested with insights observed.
